Factors that impact bridge design

Bridge design is determined largely by two factors:

Function – High speed traffic for a four lane highway would require a substantially more rigid bridge compared to a simple crossing for local traffic. Other types of traffic include trains and pedestrians.

Obstacles to span over – The type of obstacles (e.g. valley, water, and road) will influence how a bridge will be constructed. For example, a bridge over a large body of water requires an incremental launching (a bridge construction method), which would determine its shape and structure to make this method possible. The type of obstacles will also determine the location of support, its features (such as movable bridge and its span configuration) and the structure type.

Other factors include cost/budget, materials availability, aesthetic value, and the bridges lifespan.


Type of bridges

The next step in bridge design is determining the type of bridge. All bridge types have pros and cons and the selection of a bridge boils down to optimising the bridge’s ability to meet the design criteria.
